A Joyous Opening for Ways of Seeing: Narrative – Humour – Nostalgia

“These are timeless themes found in the work of William Heath Robinson, themes which continue to be important to contemporary artists even in today’s highly digital age.”

– Chris Westbrook, Heath Robinson Museum Curator

The Heath Robinson Museum was abuzz with energy on Saturday 17th May as visitors, artists, and art-lovers gathered for the opening of its latest exhibition, Ways of Seeing: Narrative – Humour – Nostalgia. Inspired by John Berger’s seminal 1972 book Ways of Seeing, the exhibition brings together work by 15 leading contemporary artists and pairs it with the imaginative legacy of William Heath Robinson.

The launch event was a resounding success, filled with conversation, curiosity, and creativity. Several of the exhibiting artists attended, including Chila Burman MBE, Adam Dant, Nicky Hirst, Patrick Hughes, John Humphreys, John Mitchell, Mauro Perucchetti, and Richard Wilson RA—each bringing their unique perspectives to the show’s themes of humour, narrative, and nostalgia.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore how storytelling, satire, and memory shape our experience of art—both past and present.

Special thanks go to Peter Coyte for the original music that enriches the video, and to dedicated volunteers Richard Lawrence and Geoff Foord, who produced the video and photography that beautifully document the event.

Ways of Seeing: Narrative – Humour – Nostalgia is now open and runs until 19th July. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the work of internationally renowned artists – including Sir Peter Blake, Ronnie Wood, Glen Baxter, and Harland Miller—alongside the beloved illustrations of Heath Robinson.
