Leslie Pitcher (B.A. Cantab.) has a degree in Classical Literature and Languages at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has lectured for the Arts Society, NADFAS, the WEA, and U3A. His particular interest is in the Classical tradition in art from the ancient world to the Renaissance.
The Scottish National gallery and National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh contain the world’s finest collection of painting by Scottish Artists form 1600-1900. In quality they rival others produced elsewhere in Europe but are little known here. We will study the best of them including Ramsey, Raeburn, Nasmyth, McTaggart and turbulent life from Wilkie to the Glasgow Boys.

The beginning of Scottish painting in the 1600’s includes ceiling paintings from Crathes Castle, portraits of aristocrats up to Allan Ramsay, including his role in the Edinburgh intelligentsia and 18th C. Enlightenment.

The second half of the 19th C. – the Scottish pre-Raphaelite William Dyce, illustrations of British literature and Scottish History by Paton and Drummond, Landscapes by McTaggart, the work of the ‘Glasgow boys’ and the impact of the ‘Celtic revival’.
