Our latest Special Exhibition, Happily Ever After? Illustrating Andersen & Perrault, opened on 24 June. Seen here at the Private View, for members of the Friends, is Michael Foreman flanked by our assistant curator, Hannah Whyte and curator Geoffrey Beare.

From the charming Puss in Boots to the artful Prince Ricky, fairy tale stories have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike for centuries.

William Heath Robinson was also a prominent book illustrator, and illustrated many fairy tale collections. This exhibition displays some of his finest drawings for fairy tales by Charles Perrault and Hans Christian Andersen. Alongside Robinson’s work, see illustrations by Michael Foreman—one of Britain’s best loved illustrators of children’s books. In contrast to Heath Robinson’s delicate line, Foreman employs vivid watercolour imagery to interpret the works of Perrault and Andersen.

The exhibition will be open until 17th September.
