Ralph Steadman Opens INKling Exhibition at the Heath Robinson Museum

“Ralph Steadman exemplifies many of the same qualities as Heath Robinson, not least a keen sense of humour and a flair for incisive social commentary. Ralph Steadman’s work spans so many genres, but his strong principles and his originality always shine through, as does his ability to enhance a story, giving readers a fresh perspective of the text.”

– Chris Westbrook, Heath Robinson Museum Curator

The much-anticipated Ralph Steadman: INKling exhibition officially launched at the Heath Robinson Museum on February 15th with a spectacular opening event attended by none other than Ralph Steadman himself. Steadman, alongside his team, marked the occasion with a lively and inspiring celebration of his extraordinary career spanning over 70 years.

The Heath Robinson Museum is honoured to be hosting Ralph Steadman: INKling, celebrating the work of one of Britain’s most influential illustrators alongside our very own Heath Robinson. Both artists, though distinct in style, share a legacy of innovation, wit, and a mastery of visual storytelling. This exhibition not only showcases Steadman’s incredible range but also highlights the rich tradition of illustration that the museum is proud to preserve and promote.

The event welcomed a full house of art lovers, illustrators, students, and fans of Steadman’s work, who gathered to witness the unveiling of this unique exhibition. Visitors were treated to an exclusive look at original illustrations from some of Steadman’s most iconic works, including Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, Treasure Island, and his famous collaborations with Hunter S. Thompson. The evening was filled with conversations about his creative process, the evolution of his style, and the impact of his work across literature, journalism, and conservation.

In a warm and engaging introduction, Sadie Williams and Chris Westbrook welcomed guests to the launch, sharing stories about Ralph Steadman’s remarkable career, his fearless creativity, and his lasting impact on the world of illustration. Their words set the stage for an unforgettable evening, capturing the essence of Steadman’s artistry and the significance of the INKling exhibition. Ralph’s infectious energy and signature wit made the Opening a truly special experience for all in attendance.

To capture the spirit of the launch, we’ve put together a short video highlighting the key moments of the event. Watch it below for a glimpse into this incredible day and hear from those who attended about what INKling means to them.
