All art was once contemporary, and no artwork exists in isolation. Artists draw inspiration from the past, respond to the present, and shape the future. John Berger’s seminal 1972 book Ways of Seeing explored how our perception of art is shaped by cultural, historical, and social contexts. Inspired by these ideas, this exhibition examines three key themes—narrative, humour, and nostalgia—through the work of Heath Robinson and fifteen contemporary artists.

Heath Robinson’s intricate and playful illustrations reflect a deep awareness of artistic movements such as Futurism, Dadaism, Cubism, and Surrealism. His satirical take on modernity, technology, and human nature finds echoes in the work of today’s artists, many of whom cite him as an influence.

By positioning Heath Robinson’s art alongside contemporary works, Ways of Seeing: Narrative – Humour – Nostalgia invites fresh interpretations, drawing connections between past and present. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, video, soundscapes, and augmented reality, showcasing how artists continue to use storytelling, satire, and memory to provoke thought, entertain, and challenge perceptions.
