Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, Salomé and Censorship
Expert art historian and former Tate curator, Simon Wilson joins us for a fascinating look into Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde's joint creation of Salomé, in his talk entitled 'Wilde Salomé: Beardsley's Illustrations, Symbolism, Decadence & Censorship'.
His talk will discuss how Oscar Wilde’s great Symbolist play Salomé in its original French version was banned from the London stage in 1892. Wilde then published an English translation and commissioned Aubrey Beardsley to illustrate it. The result caused another scandal, but the designs are now seen as a great masterpiece of book illustration.
Audience members will be admitted from 2:30pm with the talk starting at 3pm in the Verden Gallery. Tea and cakes will be served in the Museum from 4pm including a chance to enjoy the exhibition and browse the museum shop. Doors close at 5pm.
